It's safe to say that if you're a woman who wears hats to red-carpet events, you are in your own league, sartorially speaking. From Isabella Blow to Lady Gaga to Daphne Guinness, hats are the highest tier in the daring style spectrum. Wearing a hat is synonymous with announcing to the world, "You can't even get on my level. Now fetch me something scary to drink."
For Rose McGowan, whose red carpet style has always been bolder than most, the purple cap she wore to Daily Front Row's Fashion Los Angeles Awards show demonstrated a new degree of sartorial nerve. Shaped like a Louise Brooks flapper bob and made of lilac felt, the hat catapulted McGowan's all-black palazzo catsuit into the stand-out look of the evening. And, with a lineup including Ciara, Rihanna, both Hadids, and Nicole Richie (whose own bob — made of her own hair, thank you — was freshly dyed hot pink), that's quite an achievement.
E Online reported that McGowan told Katy Perry (who just dyed her own hair purple) that there's a practical reason behind the hat: it's "good for a woman with a small head." That may be true, but the description she gave of it has completely inspired us.
I'm officially starting my awesome hat week. Tonight was 1930s Vulcan #millinery
— rose mcgowan (@rosemcgowan) January 23, 2015
Think about it: 1930s Vulcan. Housedresses made of neoprene. Spock brows and winged eyeliner. Cloches with cut-outs for your incredibly pointed ears. McGowan told The Daily Mail, "I just think it's great to support LA, because there's a lot of great talent here. This hat designer, my vulcan-chic hat — she's from here." Anyone with information about the L.A.-dwelling milliner behind this Vulcan-chic concoction, please make yourself known.
