California Congressman Tweets Support For 8-Year-Old Trans* Granddaughter

Get ready to bust out the tissues. U.S. Representative Mike Honda, a 73-year-old serving California's 17th District, tweeted out a heartwarming photograph showcasing support for his 8-year-old granddaughter earlier this week. The reaction has been astounding.

Honda, an eight-term Democrat, serves as vice chairman of the LGBT Eqaulity Caucus and founded the Congressional Anti-Bullying Caucus. His public outpouring of support on a national political
stage is yet another win in what has been an incredible few years for the trans
movement.

Honda's 8-year-old granddaughter Malisa  identifies as female as of July and expressed a desire to be a role model for other kids struggling with their identity. Honda first mentioned Malisa's transition in an anti-bullying speech earlier this week. He posted his tweet, which has garnered over 8,000 retweets and 14,000 favorites, shortly after. In addition to sharing his message of acceptance on social media, Honda spoke with a Bay area newspaper about how adults need to be more aware of their children's choices and feelings.  "[People say] it's just a phase or they'll grow out of it," Honda shared. "But we have to be a little bit more in tune with what youngsters are telling us. From there, we can develop better solutions, be more thoughtful."  The daily emotional struggles of many trans* children and teens came to light late last year in the wake of 17-year-old Leelah Alcorn's suicide. Outpourings of support from high-profile politicians like Honda is hopefully the beginning of a more accepting public.  Honda also posted a thank you video for the thousands of people who have shown support following his tweet. "Malisa and I are blessed and humbled by all your support," he said. "We want to say thank you so much."
