Daily Show correspondent Samantha Bee will have her own show on TBS, the network reports.
According to a press release from TBS, the new show is still in development. However, the plan is to make it a "platform for Bee to apply her smart and satirical point of view to current and relevant issues." In addition to being host, Bee will also be executive producer alongside her husband Jason Jones. Though the details are scant at this point, it sounds a lot like Bee is our first-ever female satirical news host.
This news is in addition to an already-greenlit scripted comedy series from the couple about a family taking a road trip to Florida.
Brett Weitz, executive vice president of original programming for TBS, said Bee was a no-brainer for the network. "Like her fans around the country, we absolutely adore everything about Sam, from her straight-faced sarcasm and ruthless wit to her uncanny ability to mine comedy gold from just about any awkward situation. After watching Sam's work for years, we knew that her distinctive humor and talent belong at the front of her own show."
With all the buzz about who will replace Jon Stewart as host of the Daily Show, this certainly feels like a welcome curveball.
