By many accounts, Pharrell Williams already leads an incredibly stylish life. He's friends with Karl Lagerfeld, he starred (and sang!) in a recent campaign video for Chanel, and pioneered one of 2014's most prominent accessories trends. Now the Grammy winner has become a card-carrying fashion icon, thanks to the CFDA. The Council of Fashion Designers of America will award Pharrell the Fashion Icon Award at the ceremony on June 1. He's joining the likes of Johnny Depp, Lady Gaga, and Kate Moss who've all been honored in the past. Plus, Rihanna, who accepted the award last year in that unforgettable naked dress. Although they represent a range of ages, professions, and backgrounds, each of these icons has made a cultural impact with his or her style.
According to CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg, the choice of Pharrell was obvious. He dresses well, sure, but he also possesses an inherent coolness — and kindness — that shines beneath each one of his perfectly tailored suits. "If cool was a person, it would be Pharrell, not just for his looks and sense of style but for his kindness and openness," she said. "I cannot imagine anyone not seduced by him." Judging from the continued success of "Happy" (still!), she's absolutely right.
Pharrell will join CFDA nominees, like Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Michael Kors, and Hood by Air, who will all be competing for various design awards at the event this summer. So, mark it on your calendar, and start placing your bets on whether or not Pharrell will whip out another incarnation of that famous hat for one final hurrah.
