Scary alert: Yesterday a class action lawsuit was filed in the California Superior Court claiming that dozens of well-known wines contain dangerously high levels of arsenic. What's worse? The wineries know about it and sold the wine anyway.
The lawsuit was filed after lab tests in Denver confirmed the arsenic contamination, and two additional labs confirmed the results. The testing revealed that some of the wine exceeded the daily safe intake arsenic levels by 500%. Brands named in the lawsuit include Franzia, Ménage à Trois, Flip Flop, and Trader Joe's Two Buck Chuck White Zinfandel (say it ain't so!). According to Patch.com, "the wines named in the lawsuit are primarily inexpensive white or blush varietals including Moscato, Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc." Yikes!
Long-term exposure to arsenic can cause cancer and skin legions, and have "been associated with developmental effects, cardiovascular disease, neurotoxicity and diabetes" according to the WHO website.
