The conversation around blackface and cultural appropriation within the beauty industry is heating up again since Kylie Jenner posted some Instagram snaps of a black light photoshoot on Saturday night. She originally posted the pic with this caption: "What I wish I looked like all the time," which led to comments like "Kylie Jenner is the worst," and "Ugh, Kylie Jenner disgusts me."
About three hours later she took it down, then posted another image from the same shoot with a new caption: "This is a black light and neon lights people let's all calm down." Maybe not the most graceful response, but at least she listened.
Kylie wasn't alone in feeling the Internet fury, by the way. Zendaya was called out for initially "liking" the photo. "I didn't see it like that at [first]...that's crazy," she later tweeted. "At first, I saw more of an avatar look but thank y'all for keepin me on point... We all gotta stay aware of what image we project #lessons."
We're always ready to have a tough conversation on these topics when necessary, but it looks like Kylie (and Zendaya) are way ahead of everyone on this one. Let's not forget that just last year, her sister Kim had a run in with a man at an event in Vienna in actual blackface pretending to be her husband, Kanye West. Let's hope that guy learned his lesson as well.
