Serial Fans Are Finally Getting What They Want

The cult hit podcast Serial concluded its first season in December, but many listeners are still avidly following the ongoing case of Adnan Syed. This Monday, April 13, a new podcast will debut, picking up where Serial left off, and diving even deeper. Undisclosed: The State v. Adnan Syed is lead by lawyer Rabia Chaudry — the woman who brought Syed's case to Sarah Koenig's attention — and attorneys Susan Simpson and Colin Miller, who head up the Adnan Syed Legal Defense Fund. "In the wake of Serial, much new evidence and information has been discovered and uncovered," writes the legal team on their website. Using that new information,"Undisclosed will examine and explore the case in greater detail, from an investigatory perspective." Syed, accused and convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend as a teenager, has been in prison since 1999, but many in his community (and many more Serial listeners) believe his resolute claims of innocence. Chaudry, a childhood friend of Syed's, has been one of his most persistent and visible champions, highlighting the perplexing legal missteps that may have led to Syed's conviction. Thanks in part to the success of Serial, Syed may indeed have another shot at a trial — but it's not a sure thing yet. Chaudry, more than anyone, is aware that all this hype is a double-edged sword. "It’s been a good thing," she told us in an interview last November. "Not an easy thing but a good thing." With Undisclosed, she and Syed's other supporters are clearly trying to wield the force of media toward furthering his cause.
