iOS Update Breaks Touch ID For Some Users

While the latest iOS update Apple rolled out yesterday introduces a bunch of new improvements, it looks like iOS 8.3 may break an important iOS feature: Touch ID.  According to Apple support forums and Reddit, iPhone 5S, 6, 6 Plus, and Touch ID-supported iPads are all susceptible to the issue, which will prompt you for your Apple ID when you try to make an iTunes or App Store purchase despite having Touch ID enabled for purchases in Settings > Touch ID & Passcode. For those affected, Touch ID still works fine for locking and unlocking your device, and for using ApplePay.  This issue isn't affecting everyone who's updated their iPhone or iPad — for many, iOS 8.3 is virtually problem-free. Unfortunately, for those who do experience it, there doesn't seem to be a fix yet. As we reported yesterday, iOS 8.3 brought a number of upgrades, including a fix for WiFi connectivity issues (which have been widespread since the launch of iOS 8) and speeding up iPad performance. It also included the much anticipated addition of a new, more diverse selection of emoji. If you're feeling lucky, you can take a chance and follow steps for upgrading to iOS 8.3 here. Otherwise, you may want to hold off a week or two until Apple issues another update that fixes Touch ID functionality.
