Gay Teen And Straight Best Friend Have The Perfect Prom Night [Update]

Last month, we reported on the unofficial winner for cutest prom proposal of the year: a straight teen in Nevada who asked his gay best friend to prom with an adorable surprise banner. This weekend, the two had their prom, and Teen Vogue sent a crew to film the experience, from tux fitting to dancing the night away.  Check out the video of their heartwarming night below, followed by the story of their now-viral proposal.

Jacob Lescenski — the guy in the camo pants on the right — made the banner below to ask Anthony Martinez to prom at their Las Vegas high school. As you might have guessed, Jacob is straight and Anthony is gay, but the pair are best friends. 

"You’re hella gay, I’m hella str8, but you’re like my brother so be my d8!" reads the sign, held up by a few friends. An ecstatic Anthony appears to have said yes — and after Martinez posted the proposal on Twitter, it went viral, garnering hundreds of supportive replies and thousands of retweets from around the world. 

Jacob, the straight buddy, told RawStory he'd been planning to go the prom with a girl, but that it didn't quite work out. "One night I saw Anthony, who is my best friend, tweeting about wanting a date. I then thought about how amazing of a guy he is and that he deserved a date.” "[Jacob] has the guts to fulfill my gay student council dream of always helping out planning dances, and never getting asked. I couldn’t ask for a better person in my life," Anthony said of his best friend's proposal, according to NewNowNext. "He's a real man."
