When it's time for Nicole Richie to pack for a trip to New York, we can imagine the starlet looking at her California wardrobe, perplexed. Granted, she has spent her fair share of time in the Big Apple. But, when you're used to pretty predictable temperatures, day after day, a forecast of 57ºF and partly cloudy can be a head-scratcher — no matter how many times you've done the same dance. Do you bring a light coat or a thick jacket? Are boots out of the question? The East Coast is confusing.
Last night, Richie showed up to host the Fashion Insitute of Technology's Future of Fashion show (where our senior style editor managed to sneak in a selfie with her). So, this was a business trip. And, Nicole managed to nail the tricky territory of transitional dressing — which we shouldn't be even talking about on the first day of May, but it appears to be still kind of cold out, so here we are.
Richie was spotted earlier today, leaving her hotel in a clever combination of textures: a fuzzy, turtleneck sweater for the lingering spring chill, and light-wash denim that's optimistically looking towards warmer climes. A sleek, blazer-like coat and oversized sunglasses added some cosmopolitan sophistication to her ensemble, while sky-high pumps dressed up the baggy fit of her jeans.
Temperatures are steadily rising (thank heavens), but we'll still take this moment to appreciate Nicole's bringing together of the seasons. See how you can copy her look, below.
