It's not often you feel bad for the attendees of a $25,000-per-ticket event. But, when Rihanna shows up on the red carpet — and proceeds to shut it down, like every time — one cannot help but pity all the less-fabulous attendees, from whom attention is immediately shunted so we can marvel at her glory. In this case, glory took the form of a truly show-stopping embroidered yellow gown, the train of which fanned out dramatically around her in all directions. Yellow was a statement-making choice, since the color is associated with emperors in Imperial Chinese society. Yes, Rihanna is telling you that she is royalty, in case you ain't already know.

But, while Rihanna's appearance on the red carpet sparked so many Internet comments (and memorably inspired the hashtag #slayanna), possibly the best part of the dress was what's inside — that is, the label. The gown was designed by Guo Pei, one of the few Chinese designers actually represented on tonight's red carpet. Perhaps that's fitting for an exhibition whose theme is Western interpretations of Chinese influences. Still, in a night full of translations, it's nice to see Rihanna going straight to the source.
