If we had to predict what our favorite movie from summer 2015 would be, Dope would definitely make it into the running. The hit Sundance film — which features Shameik Moore, A$AP Rocky, and Zoe Kravitz, among others — tells the story of a teenage nerd on the road to escaping his rough Los Angeles ‘hood and figuring out who he really is.
Like the movie poster says: It’s hard out there for a geek. But, Malcolm, our hero, has a chance to redeem himself and achieve a coolness all of his own in this indie comedy that pushes the boundaries of race, class, and status. There’s something about the trailer that reminds us a bit of another under-the-radar summer hit, The Wackness. Both movies are coming-of-age teen flicks that feature a bevy of rising stars — but we’re really hopeful that Dope catches on a little more quickly and kills it at the box office.
If the behind-the-scenes roster is any indication, the film has a lot of star power behind it that will hopefully help things along. It was helmed by award-winning director Rick Famuyiwa, produced by Forest Whitaker, as well as executive produced by Pharrell Williams and Sean "Diddy" Combs.
Another prediction? If you miss this one in theaters, you’re going to regret it. Earmark June 19 as Dope movie night — and check out the new trailer below.
