Lupita Nyong’o Is Down With The Fronut

While everyone has been waxing poetic about the gorgeous, grasshopper-green Gucci gown (say that three times fast) Lupita Nyong'o wore for the Cannes Film Festival opening night, our beauty team has been busy obsessing over her hair and makeup.  Though she quite often goes for a bold lip on the red carpet, Lupita's doughnut hairdo was something new — for her, at least. Taking inspiration from the women of Uganda, her hairstylist Vernon François created a top bun that was regal and polished.  "I am passionate about demonstrating what is possible to create with natural, Afro-textured hair," he told us. "It isn’t about ’new' trends; I want to showcase to women of color all over the world how versatile their hair is by exposing them to hairstyles from different cultures. Traditional looks can and should be just as show-stopping on the high street as they are on the red carpet." And, show-stopping it was: It even got its own hashtag.  The Interwebs immediately dubbed it a "#fronut," and Lupita even posted on Instagram to give the term her stamp of approval.  While her makeup didn't spawn any such catchy hashtags, her longtime makeup artist Nick Barose knocked it out of the park, too. He complemented her goddess-like gown with bold brows and bold lips. Barose defined Lupita's arches with Lancôme Sourcils Tint Longer Eyebrow Pen in Noir, and then lined her eyes with Le Stylo Waterproof Eyeliner in Noir Intense. Her purplish-fuchsia lips were a cocktail of Lancôme lipstick in Hit List and Le Crayon Lip Contour in Plum, with a bit of Shine Lover lipstick in Palpitante as a garnish, for an added bit of shimmer on top.
