This Supermodel Trend Is Catching On At Cannes

So far, the Cannes Film Festival has brought us a bevy of weirdness, including a 5-in-1 outfit and a no flats (or "ridiculous and grotesque" selfies) policy. But, despite this, the red carpet has remained relatively tame...that is, until just now. Right when we thought Kendall Jenner was joining Team Anti-Crop Top, she threw us a curveball. She and fellow model-of-the-moment Joan Smalls hit the Cannes red carpet in basically the same ab-exposing, ball skirt getup.

Let's ignore the who-wore-it-best comparisons and focus on how cool this moment was. The reason these two are worth calling out is because the matching Azzedine Alaïa outfits are not your standard demure crop tops that we frequently see on the red carpet. (You know, the 3-4 inch lower-rib cameo made famous by Taylor Swift et al.) These two really go there. Jenner's fits like one of her signature cut-off T-shirts while Smalls' version is a bit more of a delicate and feminine approach to red carpet style. And, although we've witnessed quite a few no-pants looks so far (see: Natalie Portman, Petra Němcová, and Smalls in the above photo), this dramatic exposed-tummy trend is way more exciting. Though it's tricky to determine which professional poser took a cue from the other, something's telling us this matching set moment is more than a coincidence. We'll need a third candidate before we can officially call this silhouette a thing. (But, it's definitely getting there.)
