You've come a long way, LC. Ex-reality-star and current lifestyle maven Lauren Conrad announced today that her eponymous website will no longer use such words as "thin," "slim," and "skinny." "Starting this month, we’ll be banning any body-shaming terms from the site, and replacing them with words like 'fit,' 'toned,' and 'healthy,'" Conrad writes. "We try do to this for the most part anyway, but now we’re making it official! The word 'skinny' will now be reserved for skinny jeans."
We're applauding the move — not because the descriptors "thin," "slim," and "skinny" are never okay to use, but because Conrad's site has historically presented them as looks to achieve instead of emphasizing well-being as the goal of a healthy lifestyle. Conrad still calls her workout plan the "Bikini Boot Camp" series, which seems to imply you're not ready to wear a bikini until you've done the program — but we're focusing on the positive new tone Conrad and her team are taking. "We want to make sure that the focus is on being fit, as opposed to a number on the scale," Conrad continues. "Every body is created differently — and healthy bodies come in all shapes and sizes." Amen to that (and you may want to take this philosophy a step further and ditch your scale altogether).
