Oh, Fifty...or should I say, Edward Cullen. As Fifty Shades of Grey fans know, E.L. James' books started out as Twilight fanfic. Over time, Edward became Christian, Bella became Ana, vampirism became bondage, and boom...an equally successful series of novels and film adaptations were born — well, reborn. Now, publishers and film studios are hungry for the next fanfic success story. Paramount thinks it's found it with Anna Todd's After.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the book "centers on a virginal Washington State student named Tessa who meets a tattooed classmate named Harry (based on One Direction's Harry Styles). Virginal student...Washington State...sounds very familiar, no? THR confirms that After could indeed be considered "a Fifty Shades-type story, but for a younger generation."
Todd originally posted her Harry Styles fanfic on Wattpad, where it has been read more than 1 billion times. After was later published by Gallery Books. Susan McMartin, who writes for the CBS sitcom Mom, will be writing the screenplay.
Look what you've done, Fifty Shades of Grey. You've made fanfic mainstream. This could mean there's hope for my Gilmore Girls/O.C. slashfic, in which Jess ventures to California and goes on bad boy adventures with Ryan. (THR)
