Gilmore Girls Cast Debate Rory’s Boyfriends & More At ATX

It was a regular Stars Hollow town meeting in Austin last night as the cast of Gilmore Girls reunited on a much-anticipated panel for the ATX Television Festival. The line to get into the State Theater wrapped around the block, as cast members Lauren Graham (Lorelai), Alexis Bledel (Rory), Kelly Bishop (Emily) and more joined show creator Amy Sherman-Palladino on stage to talk about everybody's favorite mother/daughter dramedy, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Discussing the origins of the beloved show, Sherman-Palladino laughingly admitted to first pitching the WB network a list of ideas they just weren't interested in before stumbling upon Gilmore Girls. "The last thing I said was, 'I have an idea about a mother and daughter who are more like friends,' and they said, 'I'll buy that.' I was like, 'I have no idea what that is!' " Luckily, she then went on a weekend holiday at a Connecticut inn, and inspiration struck. "I thought, 'Maybe [the mother] works at an inn?' … And by the time Monday came around, it all came into place," she said. In fact, the kitchen scene from the show's pilot was even written on that hotel's stationary. When it comes to the ultimate character question — Team Dean, Team Logan, or Team Jess? — actors Jared Padalecki (Dean), Milo Ventimiglia (Jess), and Matt Czuchry (Logan) weren't shy about weighing in. Both Padalecki and Czuchry are on Team Jess, but Ventimiglia is a bold proponent of Rory's first love, Dean, and drew roars from the crowd by declaring, "Logan was a dick." It was Scott Patterson, who played the charming curmudgeon Luke Danes, who had the final word, though: "None of you are good enough for Rory."

Asked where they thought their characters would be now, eight years after the series finale, Patterson was not afraid to speculate, according to Today. "Luke has either just stayed in town … the other scenario is that he's closed it down and moved to a lake outside of town. He reopened Luke's diner, and it's a bait-and-tackle shop. He fly-fishes in the nice weather." When Lauren Graham, speaking for all of us, asked, "Does he have a girlfriend?" Patterson quickly replied, "Lorelai is coming out for a fishing lesson." Bledel thinks, "Rory would be working hard. She'd still be on her highly ambitious career path post-academia," while Keiko Agena, who played Rory's best friend, Lane Kim, was focused on her character's twin sons: "In my imagination, Lane is trying to figure out what kind of mom she wants to be. She wants to be Lorelai, but I think in her heart, she's really just a little Mrs. Kim. I hope she's still playing music with Hep Alien." Both Liza Weil and Danny Masterson hoped that their characters, Paris and Doyle, would still be together. When asked about Logan, actor Matt Czuchry could only say, "Logan would not be working. That's about as much as I know." As for rumors of a Gilmore Girls reunion show, Sherman-Palladino said, "There's nothing in the works at the moment." But keep the hope alive, Stars Hollow fans! The shows creator went on to reassure the crowd: "Here's the good thing: Nobody here hates each other. It would have to be the right everything — the right format, the right timing, it would have to be honored in a certain way. And if it ever came around, we would all jump in and do it. And if it ever happened, I promise you I'd do it correctly."
