J.Crew Just Let Go Of 175 Employees, Appointed New Head Of Women’s Design

This evening, J.Crew announced it would be letting go of 175 full-time positions at its corporate headquarters in NYC. In addition, it has made two huge new appointments: Somsack Sikhounmuong as the head of women’s design for J.Crew and Joyce Lee as the head of women’s design for Madewell. Sikhounmuong, who has held the head of women’s design position at Madewell for the last two years will replace Tom Mora, who J.Crew reports is leaving the company. And, Lee steps into her new position as a seven-year employee of the brand, having most recently fulfilled a position on the Madewell senior design team. Although the Madewell business has been performing incredibly well, J.Crew has openly suffered, reporting just last week another 5% decrease in sales for the last quarter. These new shakeups are intended to set both brands up for success moving forward. "We are making meaningful and strategic changes across our organization to better position us for future growth,” says Mickey Drexler, J.Crew chairman, CEO, and recent honoree of the CFDA Founder Award. “While many of these decisions were difficult, they are necessary. With Somsack in his new role, we will continue to focus on making critical improvements to our J.Crew women's assortment including fit, design aesthetic, and styling.
