Between denim on denim, the rise of Destiny's Child, and Beanie Babies, what's not to love about the '90s? Sure, sometimes our monthly (okay, daily) reminiscing makes us feel like we're climbing that age ladder quick, fast, and in a hurry, but the hilarious flashbacks always make us grateful for all the good that decade gave us — especially the clothes and tunes. Of course, when it comes to pop culture, the two go hand in hand. Now, one highly anticipated film explores the symbiotic relationship between music and fashion in the '70s, '80s, and '90s, from the South Bronx to Paris Fashion Week.
Fresh Dressed is a captivating documentary about the evolution of hip-hop and urban fashion, chronicling how styles that emerged on the front lines of a cultural movement quickly spread to corporate America and into the closets of millions. Directed by acclaimed music journalist and cofounder of ego trip magazine Sacha Jenkins, the film includes original insights from music industry heavy hitters including Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, Sean "Puffy" Combs, Nas, and Pusha T. The artists reflect on their old-school influences while Jenkins eloquently illustrates how style served as an outlet and motivator for poor and underprivileged communities.
According to the pros, fresh and flare are key — in fact, they're the only "rules" that apply. "Being fresh is more important than having money," West says. And according sneaker aficionado Mayor, being fresh all started with your feet. In the exclusive clip below, Mayor, rapper Jim Jones, and others dish about what it meant to have the latest kicks and why being "fresh to death" was paramount.
