Yesterday, news rang out across the internet that Disney was primed to reboot one of its most beloved franchises. "Disney Set to Crown a 3rd Princess Diaries," read the headline on The Tracking Board, where the report originated.
The beloved original launched Anne Hathaway to stardom as Mia Thermopolis, a teen who discovers she's the heir to the throne of Genovia, a fictional kingdom. Julie Andrews played Genovia's current queen and Mia's grandmother. It had all the trappings of a hit: Unassuming girl learns she's secretly royalty, gets made over, and realizes she's been a dynamo all along. A sequel soon followed.
"For years, rumors have circled about Disney’s plans to release a third chapter," The Tracking Board wrote yesterday, noting that Hathaway has frequently denied any involvement with the project. According to the site, the third film was finally underway at Walt Disney Pictures, with original producer Debra Chase on board.
The general reaction on Twitter was something along the lines of "THEY'RE MAKING PRINCESS DIARIES 3 DREAMS DO COME TRUE!!!!!!! <3"
Well, Disney caught wind of the rumors and was all:
A source close to Disney says that The Princess Diaries 3 is not in development. Sigh. The films will have to exist as they do now, as a perfect pair instead of a trilogy.
