Richard Matt, one of the two convicts who escaped from a maximum security prison in early June, was shot dead by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent yesterday afternoon, the Buffalo News reports. Fellow escapee David Sweat remains at large.
The 49-year-old Matt was discovered in a cabin near Malone, New York. Agents found the convicted killer armed with a 20-gauge shotgun. Police say that Matt neither fired the weapon nor surrendered, but was shot by an agent.
"You never want to see anyone lose their life,” New York Gov. Cuomo told the press. “But I would remind people that Mr. Matt was an escaped murderer from a state prison. Mr. Matt killed two people that we know about. Mr. Matt killed his boss in a dispute and dismembered him. He fled to Mexico and killed another person in Mexico.”
A second figure was seen fleeing the scene of Matt's fatal shooting, but it has not yet been confirmed that it was Sweat, a convicted cop killer. Police in the area are said to be closing in on the 35-year-old escapee.
We will continue to update the story as more news comes in.
