Word to the wise: China is not messing around.
NME is reporting that two upcoming Maroon 5 shows in Beijing and Shanghai have been scrapped over a tweet a band member posted. The controversial tweet in question? Keyboardist Jesse Carmichael's birthday message to the Dalai Lama. The message and a related Instagram post have since been deleted.
His Holiness has had a contentious relationship with China in his battle for Tibetan independence. The holy figure has been exiled in India since 1959.
Now, two Maroon 5 shows this September have been cancelled. No official explanation has been given, but the BBC notes that Chinese authorities were reportedly angered over the band's support of the Dalai Lama. Adam Levine and company, will, however, still perform in Hong Kong.
The lesson here? Watch what you tweet. Or, stand by your convictions and let the chips fall where they may.
