People are always stealing Greta Gerwig's shit in this clip from her new movie, Mistress America, exclusive to Refinery29.
In the new Noah Baumbach film, which Gerwig co-wrote, she plays Brooke, a self-contradicting, zany dreamer with mile-a-minute conversational technique. Lola Kirke's Tracy, who just moved to New York to start college, becomes enamored of Brooke, her soon-to-be stepsister. (Does she look familiar? Kirke is the sister of Girls star Jemima Kirke.)
Here, Tracy helps Brooke search through a closet for a pair of pilfered red pants. As Tracy digs through the clothes, Brooke describes the injustices wrought upon her by her "ex-friend and nemesis" — who, according to Brooke, stole her fiancé, her idea for T-shirts with "really hard-looking flowers," and her cats. A trip to visit this ex-friend will prove a pivotal moment in the movie.
Gerwig and Baumbach previously collaborated on the screenplay for Frances Ha. Expect Brooke to join Frances as another unforgettable cinematic creation. Mistress America, which premiered at Sundance, debuts August 14.
