When there's something strange in the neighborhood, who ya gonna call?
Until this morning, our answer would have been a simple, resounding "Ghostbusters!" — a joyful chorus in reference to both the beloved 1984 classic that gave us some of young Bill Murray's best one-liners, as well as Paul Fieg's upcoming all-female reboot starring Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, Melissa McCarthy, and Kate McKinnon.
But if all the recent media coverage of the female-fronted Ghostbusters (new costumes! Chris Hemsworth is the new Annie Potts!) left you asking, "Won't someone think of the poor, disenfranchised men in this world?" You can rest easy: Someone did. The all-male Ghostbusters reboot rumors that hit the Twittersphere this spring now actually appear to be panning out. Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation screenwriter Drew Pearce has completed a draft of the script for the Russo brothers, MTV reports. (Gender barriers, be damned.)
“I’ve finished my work on that in the last couple weeks. Obviously it's top secret," Pearce told MTV. But the movie scribe didn't hesitate when asked if Chris Pratt and Channing Tatum would take lead roles: "That’s definitely the cast we’ve been thinking about as we approach the project."
Pierce also revealed to MTV that he and fellow film executives would like their upcoming boys-club reboot to "occur in the same Ghostbusters universe" as both the original film as well as the all-female movie shooting this summer, "because I feel, as a fan, that’s what I would want.”
As fans ourselves, we're just wondering why another, male-fronted Ghostbusters needs to be made at the same time as the all-female reboot? Afraid the lady-led version would simply fill too many seats?
