Americans Spend HOW Much On Takeout?!

Photographed by Ben Ritter.
If you are horrified every time you see your monthly credit card Seamless bill, you're not alone. As it turns out, many Americans seem to be just as smitten with ordering food online as we are. In fact, according to a study conducted by Butterball.com, the average American spends approximately $1,100 per year on online takeout alone. (So, that's not even including the old-fashioned pick-up-the-phone method.) That's $20.95 per week, which unfortunately seems sort of low for those of us (this writer definitely included) who tend to rack up a whopping $15 on one Seamless order alone. Out of 1,000 participants, 1 in 20 admitted to ordering online takeout every one or two days. The main reasons respondents gave for ordering meals also sound strangely familiar. Cravings, laziness, and not knowing what to cook were the top three excuses for heading straight to the internet for dinner. Let's face it, we've all been there, probably at least one to two times per week. Not surprisingly, we have online delivery apps like Seamless and Grubhub to thank for our growing inclination to order in. Over half of the people in the study admitted to using the apps, and of those people, 64% said they order online more frequently now than before downloading the apps. Since the study was conducted by Butterball, we're guessing the company is hoping we'll start cooking at home more, perhaps specifically with turkey? Regardless, this may be just the eye-opening information we need to force ourselves into the kitchen more often. This handy recipe guide to making and freezing the meals you already order on Seamless may be a good place to start. Full disclosure: I'm still ordering Seamless for lunch. (Daily Mail)
