July was a rather tough month for music lovers, mainly because Frank Ocean’s sophomore album, Boys Don’t Cry, was not released, as promised. Seriously, Frank, grace our ears already. However, August started with a bang, thanks to FKA twigs, Consequence of Sound reports.
Following the last show of her tour at Lollapalooza, twigs released a new track called “Figure 8” from her upcoming EP, Melissa. Zane Lowe premiered the track on Beats 1 Radio — a sector of Apple’s dive into the ever-competitive music streaming business — today, and in the words of the beloved DJ, it’s “an absolute banger.”
While twigs croons “Let me live,” over haunting electric pulses, the British singer shared a touching story behind the simple yet captivating track.
“I wrote “Figure 8” after I finished LP1, maybe four or five months later,” she explained to Lowe. “It’s called “Figure 8” because the eight represents eternity and I was just feeling actually quite sad and a bit lost.”
After the release of her first record, twigs had a difficult time keeping track of who she was, and what she wanted to do. Although the debut album was highly regarded, twigs also feared that her big start could end even quicker. It was in New York, at the hands of a voguing expert, Derrick Prodigy, that she found herself all over again.
“I started doing some lessons with him, and just going to vogue clubs with him, and he taught me that every hand movement you do in voguing is a figure of eight, and that is eternity,” she said. “I was really inspired by that, and by that concept.”
A dark deviation from her breakout hits, “Two Weeks” and “Pendulum,” it’s hard not to get excited about the rest of the upcoming EP. It’s also tricky to comprehend how such a beautifully intense song could keep twigs centered in the midst of her self-exploration, as Lowe points out.
Perhaps this vacation is so that twigs can focus on wedding plans. Either way, we’ll have “Figure 8” on repeat until her (hopefully not too long awaited) return. Listen to the hot new track below. (Consequence of Sound)
