Movie premieres can be such tired, staid affairs. Put on a gown or tux. Step onto the red carpet. Smile for the cameras. Take two steps forward and repeat. The whole process can be a bit tedious, so why not have a little fun with it? That seemed to be the attitude embraced by The Diary of a Teenage Girl cast at the film's San Francisco premiere, which was held at the Castro Theater on Monday, August 3. The film is set in the '70s, so the cast turned up to the premiere decked out in attire inspired by the decade.
Star Alexander Skarsgård took it one step further with his look. Perhaps taking a cue from the rousing 11 o'clock number "Wig in a Box" from Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Skarsgård put on some makeup, took his wig down from the shelf, and suddenly, he looked just like Miss Farrah Fawcett from TV. Wearing a gold sequin gown and high heels, he towered over his co-stars like a proud (and very bronzed) mother hen. The rest of the cast also looked to be having an absolute blast in their retro garb.
It's not entirely clear why Skarsgård rocked up to the premiere in drag (we've reached out to his rep for comment), but seriously, why not? It may have been a reference to the film's Rocky Horror Picture Show scene, which was reportedly shot at the Castro. Whatever the reason for his sartorial choice, Skarsgård looked glamorous, which is just how stars are expected to appear on the red carpet. Could this be the beginning of a trend of film premiere costume parties? One can only hope Jennifer Lawrence shows up to Joy's opening night dressed as an actual Miracle Mop.
