Facebook Predicts Who Will Win The Emmys

If Facebook mentions equaled Emmy voters, then Game of Thrones and Modern Family would be in luck. Facebook added up online chatter about all of this year's contenders between July 16, when the nominations were announced, and September 16, to come up with a set of predictions. Of course, what Facebook users talk about does not necessarily translate into Emmy votes, so we wouldn't suggest using these as your main source for winning your office pool. People love to talk about Game of Thrones online, but the show is up against the final season of Mad Men, a much more Academy-friendly series. (It has won Best Drama three times.) The fact that Tatiana Maslany got a (deserved) nomination for playing all those clones on Orphan Black is a small miracle for her devotees, but the prize will likely go to someone else, likely Viola Davis for How To Get Away With Murder. A win for either Davis or Taraji P. Henson (Empire) would be historic: no African-American has ever won lead actress in a drama. We’re thinking Jeffrey Tambor’s critically beloved performance in Transparent will beat out Facebook's pick of Anthony Anderson’s in Black-ish. And, as much as everyone loves Amy Schumer right now, the actress in a comedy award will go to Emmy favorite Julia Louis-Dreyfus again or the never-awarded Amy Poehler for her work in Parks and Recreation. (We're rooting hard for Poehler.) It makes sense that the Facebook data would signal a high level of excitement for Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show given his viral bits, but Emmy voters have given it to The Colbert Report for the past two years and to The Daily Show for many years before that. With affection for both those shows running high following the end of Report and Stewart stepping down, we expect one of them to claim the prize. Or maybe John Oliver’s HBO show upsets. The ones we think Facebook’s buzz meter may have actually predicted? Outstanding Comedy Series. Modern Family has won every year since 2010 and, though it pains us, why should this one be different? Facebook's data also revealed that chatter about Jon Hamm for his work in the final season of Mad Men is high. Though he’s never won an Emmy for playing Don Draper, we pray this one is true.
