Forget being in season for a red-carpet appearance — Kerry Washington went with a Spring 2016 look for tonight’s Emmy Awards that was exceptionally fresh. As in, 72-hours-since-it-was-on-the-runway fresh. Washington’s spangled, sheer, silver Marc Jacobs dress, complete with a bit of shoulder padding, was look number 49 in the designer’s extravagant New York Fashion Week catwalk on Thursday night. Talk about a quick turnaround...

When it was Washington’s turn to banter with Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet, she brilliantly beat Seacrest to the punch with that ubiquitous, often-criticized awards show question: "What are you wearing?" Seacrest responded by opened his jacket to reveal the label: Ryan Seacrest Distinction. Washington played nice and put on a faux-shocked face for Seacrest's very meta outfit reveal. But Jimmy Kimmel had some snarkier words for Seacrest: "You're wearing yourself? That's like masturbating."

The Emmys red carpet tonight featured less of the sexist, outfit-obsessed questioning than usual, likely in light of the #AskHerMore hashtag campaign, which started in February 2014. More recently, Amy Poehler's Smart Girls Organization partnered with Twitter and the Television Academy on another hashtag, #SmartGirlsAsk, to combat inane step-and-repeat questions (female) celebs have to deal with.
That Washington is doing the outfit-asking instead of Seacrest got her some major props on Twitter. “Loved how @kerrywashington turned the tables and asked Ryan Seacrest what he was wearing! #ERedCarpet #Emmys2015 #AskHerMore,” tweeted @FilmFatale_NYC, while the AAUW (American Association of University Women) went even further — “@kerrywashington, you are our hero!” Here's to hopefully hearing more interesting red-carpet banter this awards season.
