Malala Yousafzai Preaches The Golden Rule On The Late Show

Yesterday, Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai addressed the United Nations — right after Pope Francis. It wasn't an easy fact to follow, but she pulled it off beautifully. (We had no doubt in our minds, for the record, that she would be brilliant.) But, her talk tour in New York didn't end there for the day: Last night, the teen activist and author went on The Late Show and brought some wisdom beyond her years to the small screen. After listing Yousafzai's many accomplishments and telling her that the reception she received was at Taylor Swift-like levels (he wasn't kidding, either), Colbert asked her how she cultivated forgiveness in her heart for the men that attacked her. Her response is something that all people should work to take to heart. "I think of the world as a happy place. And I believe that I should treat others the way I want them to treat me," the 18-year-old explained. "I want everyone to be kind to me, to love me, to take care of me, to forgive me if I do something bad. And that's what I have chosen in my mind: I have forgiven them." "I'm hopeful that they will change," she added. "It's not just them, but many other people who are picking up guns and telling them, 'Put down your guns and try to do things in a peaceful way.'"
