Cheerios Recalls 1.8 Million Boxes Of Cereal

Bad news if you are celiac and you were counting on your morning bowl of Cheerios. CBS News is reporting that General Mills is recalling 1.8 million boxes of Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios due to contamination that could put people with wheat allergies and celiac disease at risk. General Mills initiated the voluntary recall and Cheerios has taken to Twitter to apologize and explain to consumers how they can identify the contaminated products.

The company is in the process of converting five Cheerio varieties to gluten-free and this recall affects Honey Nut Cheerios and classic Cheerios in the yellow box. While boxes in warehouses and in stores will all be returned, General Mills asks customers with wheat allergies to call the company at 1-800-775-8370 with any concerns. "[T]here have been reports of illness by consumers online," company spokesperson Kirsite Foster told CNN. "Two complaints of illness have been reported directly to General Mills related to the affected products." We feel for those who got sick and for General Mills. Recalling almost two million boxes of cereal is no easy feat — not to mention dealing with a lot of angry customers. Plus, we can't get this commercial out of our heads.
