Move Over Jessica Biel, Carrie Coon Is Ready To Sin

There's a new sinner in town. According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Leftover's actress Carrie Coon will join season 2 of The Sinner, replacing former star Jessica Biel as the show's leading lady. However, Coon's brand-new character, Vera, sounds very little like Biel's inadvertently murderous mom, who was ultimately found not responsible for the death of the man she stabbed on the beach at the end of season 1.
Though Biel will continue to executive produce The Sinner, it seems that Cora's story is officially over, and that Vera's own twisty mystery can begin. The series will follow Bill Pullman's Detective Ambrose as he investigates a new case, which allows him to cross paths with Vera herself.

Vera is described by THR as a "mysterious" woman who has difficulties "upholding the ideals of the community she leads and fulfilling her own desires." What will that have to do with Ambrose or the case he's pursuing? That's for The Sinner to reveal, piece by piece, over its sure-to-be-chilling sophomore season.
According to THR, Coon's Vera is the leader of a commune (anyone else getting Wild, Wild Country vibes?) who has some connection to Ambrose's latest bizarre murder case. This time around, it's an 11-year-old boy who kills his parents with no apparent motive. Ambrose's case will pull him into the "darkness" of his hometown in upstate New York, and entangle him with Vera and all her own mysteries.
The first season of USA Network's The Sinner was based on the book of the same name by Petra Hammesfahr. The novel ended where Cora's story does in the TV series. The second season, which is due in August, will not follow any source material, outside of Ambrose's character being at the center of yet another mystery. Therefore, we'll first meet Vera on the small screen — and won't be able to spoil any of her secrets by reading a book first.
