Yesterday, the mega Japanese basics retailer feted the opening of their U.S. 5th Ave flagship on 53rd St., which is a whopping 89,000 square feet (that's bigger than a football field, in case you were wondering), and the largest lease in Manhattan's history. “I want to make sure that [Americans] are very happy to have Uniqlo in the U.S.,” said Tadashi Yanai, Uniqlo's CEO. To help his cause, he told WWD that he's building around five other Uniqlos in Manhattan, 15 in the surrounding suburbs, and look into expanding to Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Heattech, $50 cashmere, and colored jeans for us Yankees? Welcome, Uniqlo! (WWD)
