2015

29Rooms Debuts in NYC

29Rooms debuted in New York during fashion week in 2015 as a way to disrupt this traditionally exclusive event and make creativity accessible to all. As a celebration of our 10th anniversary, we featured 29 unique rooms by visionary artists and creative voices, including Solange Knowles who co-created Sound in the Clouds room. Music just somehow sounds better when you replace your headphones with giant fluffy clouds.

2016

Powered By The People

Inspired by the theme “Powered by People,” our second 29Rooms celebrated how individuals can create change both big and small, like the Gurls Talk room. Created with founder Adwoa Aboah, this room featured hundreds of pale pink phones hanging from the ceiling. Holding one up to your ear allowed you to hear inspirational women tell their story with their own words.

2017

Turn It Into Art

In 2017, 29Rooms expanded to LA with the theme, Turn It Into Art, focused on making every experience an artistic one. The rooms invited visitors to get creative and playful, with installations that celebrated self-expression, like Jake Gyllenhaal's Shred It room. “If you have something that’s weighing you down, you shred it up and throw it out into the universe,” said the actor of his interactive space.

2018

Expand Your Reality

In 2018, Expand Your Reality invited guests into an alternate realm via phone-free experiences, hands-on art making, live performances, and social experiments, like the 29 Questions room. Perhaps the most personal space, this room paired you up with strangers and challenged you to share the answers to intimate questions.

2019

The Tour Begins

29Rooms expanded to seven markets in 2019 with a multi-city tour, including NY, LA, Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta, DC, and Toronto. The event continued to blend art, culture, and activism, featuring larger-than-life installations such as our Inner Beauty Ball, a no-phones-allowed dance party curated with music and performances for each tour stop.

2023

Going Global In Singapore

In 2023, 29Rooms made its debut in Singapore, marking its first expansion into Asia. The 10-week sensory experience was built around the theme of "Lost & Found," inviting visitors to rediscover, reimagine, and redefine the meaning of possibilities. Local Singaporean artists curated several of the interactive spaces, including the Merry-Go-Round room designed by Aeropalmics. This installation featured six different seats from the typical Singaporean's daily schedule, each symbolizing how easily one can get lost in the routine of a day.

2025

The 29Rooms Roadtrip

In celebration of Refinery29’s 20th anniversary, 29Rooms returns with The 29Rooms Road Trip. First stop: Palm Springs for The Lunar Lounge, a pre-festival pit stop and cosmic recharge. Attendees can expect all the vibes with offerings like astrology readings, beauty touch-ups, DIY fit upgrades, and more – all aimed to get fans glowing, styled, and ready to hit the festival grounds.
