It's Saturday evening at the big game, and we're sitting on the bleachers with the rest of our class (Terry, Anna, Tavi) as our school's resident cool kids (Hanne, Alla, Kasia, and Edita) come strutting out on the field to the steady beat of the marching band. Or, at least that's what it felt like when Alex Wang staged a definitively all-American collection at Pier 94. We're talking khaki trousers, red-and-white striped sweaters, sweatshirt dresses, and baseball shorts. But don't get us wrong: These are the clothes your high-school cheerleaders should've worn had they Alex's uncanny knack for making the routine look special again in a kooky leather football-shaped purse, for example, or a cut-out sweatshirt dress that was sexy rather than scrubby. Sure, it's a departure from Wang's usual brand of downtown New York grit and glam, but if you think about it, Wangsters like Wasson and Dellal would look right at home in the slouchy tees and trenches...as long as they're paired with his high-waisted underwear or bra tops. Because as we all know, it's not about what you're wearing, but how you wear it. And nobody does accidentally sexy better than the Wang himself.
