We like to believe that style has no boundaries — we're all able to wear whatever best reflects our day, our attitude, our beliefs. But Brooklyn-born, Brooklyn-based artist Andre Springer has personified this creed. Springer — whose drag alter ego goes by the name Shaquanda Coca Mulatta — is no stranger when it comes to style transformations. He's sourced inspiration from all kinds of badass, awesome ladies to create a character that's a true spitfire.
My style in six words or less:
"Rosie the Riveter, Tupac, unicorns."
My constant source of style inspiration:
"The Golden Girls."
The dressing difficulties I've had to overcome:
"Society will always have difficulties appreciating crossdressing/gender-bending. It can freak people out. But doing it in a way to freak them out with a laugh or smile is success!"
My favorite up-and-coming designers:
"El Mundo Feo T-shirts, Shaquanda Coca Mulatta, and Charlie Ward for men."
My most surprising, out-of-left-field fashion find:
"A ladies', Japanese-kimono-styled, polyester housecoat I found in a Paris thrift store. It flows when I walk fast enough or while going up and down the stairs. I feel like a geisha on a budget, but it looks like a princess would own it. I love it."
My style theme song:
"Rihanna, 'Pour It Up.'"
If you were 80 years old today:
"I would dress like a punk-rock Mr. Rogers."
