UPDATE: We received the below official statement from Balenciaga.
"Due to an issue with Balenciaga.com for orders placed within the United States, signature Balenciaga products were made available for a limited time with incorrectly listed prices. Balenciaga will not be able to fulfill orders placed through our e-commerce platform during the time of the pricing error. Balenciaga regrets any inconvenience that this may have caused to its valued clients. Because Balenciaga values their patronage, clients who have been affected by the error will be reimbursed for their purchases and will be issued a gift certificate that will be redeemable at Balenciaga retail locations within the United States. Balenciaga customer service will contact each person individually with information on the gift certificate process."
Yesterday afternoon, if you noticed that your fashion-obsessed friends had suddenly stopped answering Gchats, responding to texts, or generally disappeared from the Internet, it was because they were all taking advantage of a truly rare, magical, once-in-a-shopper's-lifetime happenstance: Balenciaga's website had gone on the fritz, and handbags were available for a steep discount. Like, a "where's-the-extra-one-in-front-of-that-amount?" discount. For instance, the leather Traveler Backpack typically ranges from $1,465 to $1,635, and it was listed yesterday for $285. It's unclear whether these discounted sales from yesterday afternoon will be honored — some successful customers who were able to make it through to checkout have not yet heard about an order cancellation. We reached out to a rep from Balenciaga, and will update with any additional info.

We spoke to two ladies who were able to place an order. Said Ashley, who works in fashion, and heard about the glitch from a fashion editor friend, “By the time I got to the site, most of the items were sold out, and it took forever for my order to process. I almost had an aneurism! I pretty much went for anything under $600 but was only able to check out with two items: the Papier A4 tote in red and the Rouge Coquelicot wallet in red. I heard all orders are subject to cancellation so we'll see if it was worth the frenzy!”
Sierra, who heard about the glitch from a fashion editor sibling, said, “I immediately looked for Le Dix bags. I got one in small, pink [for] $265. The black was sold out. I also saw that there was a metallic edge Mini City crossbody for $365, so I picked one up. I had to try about five times before I used another credit card (my bank thought it was a fraudulent purchase) for my purchase to go through. My husband and I were both home at the time working so I did yell at him to get on the site and help me. What an adrenaline rush — I was kinda embarrassed of myself."
As of 9 a.m., the Balenciaga website is still down. But in the meantime, that intense FOMO you're experiencing should be enough to preoccupy your time.
