We associate January with some less-than-pleasant things: frigid weather, dwindling holiday joy, and bank-statement shock after all that generous gifting. But there's a bright side, too: A fresh start always makes us want to kick our rears into gear and get into better shape.
Fitness experts note that to really shake your body out of a pie-and-pot-roast-induced plateau, you have to surprise it with new exercises (read: you can't just zone out on the elliptical five times a week). So, we were beyond stoked when Barre3 opened shop in our neighborhood this week. The unique hybrid of ballet, Pilates and yoga is designed to shock and awe your body into a longer, leaner version of itself, with high-energy tunes driving each class. Celeb devotees of the method include Madonna (we’re pretty sure she’s 100% muscle), who regularly trains using the barre-centric repetitions.

The gorgeous new studio on the Georgetown waterfront feels like a cozy ski lodge in Aspen, with exposed wood beams and rustic décor touches — it’s worth a visit for the visuals alone. And as a perk, classes are free until Tuesday, in honor of the grand opening. They were fully booked last time we checked, but you can always show up early and hope someone doesn’t show. See you at the barre?
