Become A Fashion History Buff At The Getty Museum’s Panel Discussion On Fashion In Film This Sunday

Here at Refinery29, we're all about the way you, dear readers, interpret fashion in your everyday lives. But whether you're wearing Prada or Payless, the clothes on your back are the result of a long and complex history of design. You might read about wars and treaties in textbooks, but the movies are the perfect place to turn for a living history of fashion through the ages. You can hear all about it from Academy Award-winning designer James Acheson, costume designer and UCLA professor Deborah Landis, and fasion historian Kimberly Chrisman-Campbell in their panel discussion "Dressing the Part: Historical Costume in Film" at the Getty Center this Sunday, June 5. Chrisman-Campbell will begin the discussion with a history of medieval and 18th-century fashion (corsets, bustiers, copious lace...we haven't changed a bit, have we?). Landis and Acheson, who designed the costumes for Dangerous Liaisons, will then speak from their considerable experience on how the manuscripts and illustrations of yore provide a baseline from which to create costumes that must correspond to a film's overall aesthetic without abandoning historical accuracy.

When: This Sunday, June 5, at 3 p.m. Reservations recommended, call (310) 440-7300 or go online.
Where: The Getty Center, Harold M. Williams Auditorium, 1200 Getty Center Drive.
