Behold: The Perfect Matte Lipstick For Summer

Certain beauty products — think NARS blush in Orgasm, Clinique's Black Honey lipstick — are so good, they're practically famous and have devoted, loyal followings. While we love many of these, we've been wondering why others have been quietly flying under the radar. With that in mind, meet our series,Cult Classics, in which we'll introduce you to the products you should really, truly know about (and try, like, right now). They're not brand-new, but trust us: They've got staying power.

"Summer" and "matte" may not seem like a winning combination — but trust me, they are. When it's sweltering outside, a matte lip provides a nice contrast to that glow (i.e. sweat) we all seem to be sporting by mid-July. But, finding the perfect matte lipstick is a difficult feat. Many are drying, flaky, or chalky — and if they're not, they often have that wonderful habit of fading or bleeding three sips into your morning iced coffee. For a while, I thought I'd have to settle for a subpar formula for the rest of my life. Then, I met Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Luminous Matte lipstick. The creamy formula is easily the best I've tried, which is really saying something, since I try makeup for a living. (I know: tough life.) It glides onto lips like a balm, stays put for hours like a stain, but leaves behind the most perfect, soft, non-feathery lipstick color. Now, let's talk about the "matte" part for a second. Technically, these are referred to as "luminous mattes," which is PR speak for almost-matte. But that's what we love most about them. The velvety-satin finish is by no means shiny, but it has just enough moisture in it to make your lips look full — not flat. If you're looking for a MAC Retro-Matte situation, you're in the wrong place. But if you want a pretty, bold lip, this is for you. The collection boasts an arsenal of vibrant hues, from orangey-reds to hot pinks. There are even a few muted pinks (try "La Rafinee") in the line, if you're not looking to draw too much attention to your pout. My personal favorite is "La Romanesque," a silky, fuchsia shade (above) that is perfect for nearly any occasion. Especially summer. Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Luminous Matte Lip Color, $36, available at Nordstrom.
