Cheryl Strayed, author of Wild, lost her mother 24 years ago to lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer deaths in both men and women in the U.S. Women’s Health recently sat down with Strayed to talk about her experience and her recent partnership with the American Lung Association (ALA).

In her interview with Women's Health, Strayed explains, “I had no idea when my mom was diagnosed that it was the number-one cancer killer of women… Whenever I tell people that lung cancer is the number-one cancer killer of women, they’re never not surprised.” In fact, Strayed continues, lung cancer leads to more deaths in men and women “than colon, breast, and pancreatic cancers combined.”

Lung cancer does not just affect smokers; Strayed’s mother hadn’t touched a cigarette in over 10 years when she was diagnosed. Strayed has partnered with the ALA in order to fight the stigma associated with the disease and to raise money for cancer research.
