Beauty trends — like all trends — are cyclical. Lipliner inspired by the '90s, full brows defined by the '80s, suede and fringe straight from the '70s — gang's all here. That's not to say we're seeing the same ol' versions each time these styles come back into the ether, though; there's always a new twist that makes them feel modern and fresh. Just take a look at the spring runways where mod '60s makeup was remixed with negative-space eyeliner, spiky eyelashes, and neutral lips. Or, check out this gal we spotted on the streets of NYC wearing her own take on the trend. Not wanting to miss out ourselves, we chatted with makeup artist Allie Smith to give us a lesson in liner and lashes.
After applying foundation and filling your brows as you normally would, draw a thick cat-eye along your upper lashline with a liquid eyeliner, like COVERGIRL Intensify Me! Liquid Liner. But, instead of lining your eyes from the inner corner outward, do the opposite to create the tail of your cat-eye first. Use your lower lashline as a guide for the flick, and work from the outer corner in. A felt-tip pen comes in super handy because it helps create a smooth line in one go.
Then, using just the tip of your eyeliner pen, draw thin dashes along your lower lashline for faux lashes that are subtle yet provocative. Finish up with several generous coats of mascara, like COVERGIRL The Super Sizer by LashBlast Mascara, and boom — you're done.
Now, any guesses on when 1940s-inspired victory rolls will come back into play?
