This Is Our Jam: Deerhunter, “Monomania”

deerhunter
Over the past decade, few bands have maintained the creative drive, sound exploration, or sheer intensity of Atlanta's Deerhunter. And, if "Monomania" –– the title title track from its new record –– is any indication, Bradford Cox and co. aren't going to stop anytime soon.
"Monomania" is a jangly piece of rock 'n' roll that plays like a sonic manifestation of its title. What begins as fuzzed-out guitar pop soon melts into a squall of noise, with Cox reaching an almost hypnotic intensity. As he repeats the title ad nauseam ("Mono, mono, mania! Mono, mono, mania!"), it becomes a self-fullfiling prophesy of anger and outrage. Deerhunter has a lot of different sides, but hearing the band unleashed as garage-punk titans in full effect is one of the more satisfying things you can hear these days.
