Twitter Was Called…Smssy?!

It’s kind of weird to think of our social networking sites looking or sounding even a smidgen off from what we’re used to, but before these tech companies settled on their "aha" moments, there were those forsaken potential titles and logos that never saw the light of public day (which is not a bad thing).
According to Gizmodo, New York Times tech writer Nick Bilton (and R29 fave) drummed up some interesting research for his new book, Hatching Twitter: A True Story of Money, Power, Friendship, and Betrayal, and discovered that Twitter was almost called Smssy (we know!) or Twitch. Even worse, the would-be branding was just as cringe-worthy as those names, with video game-like blocked letters and even green bubble typography — all created by Twitter co-founder Biz Stone. Check out the metamorphoses and the quirky iterations over on Bilton’s blog and believe us, you’ll be thanking your lucky stars for that blue bird right now.
