Every Fashion Week, we look forward to seeing all the exciting makeup looks on the runways. But, for us, it's the exclusive first looks that really get our juices flowing. Amongst our favorite moments of the season so far (considering NYFW just started, a hot second ago) was getting a sneak peek at the Houghton spring '13 show makeup look. We headed to the Houghton showroom to sit in with MAC makeup artist Lyne D., as she created a pretty, yet tomboyish look for the show. "The collection is very much inspired by Katharine Hepburn (fun fact: Houghton was her middle name). It's a lot of pantsuits with masculine undertones, inspired by London street art and that London girl. She's sexy and feminine, but still a bit of a tomboy," says Houghton designer Katharine Polk (who, funnily enough, is named after the screen star).

Polk collaborated with Lyne D. to pull inspiration from Hepburn and the '30s modern woman. "My job is to tell the full story on the runway," says Lyne. "Having an inspiration like Katharine Hepburn who was just so incredibly spirited and modern was so great." Both Polk and Lyne settled on a bold brow, juxtaposed by a pink lip — the end result looking feminine, modern, and tomboyish, (very much in line with its famous inspiration). Look through this step-by-step guide for how to create this winning look, and don't forget to check out the Houghton spring '13 show tomorrow, to see the final effect.
Lyne D. works with the model's natural brows to create a bold, straight brow. Her assistant looks on to take notes, so the look they create today can be replicated the day of the show.
Using MAC Brow Fluidline (available next spring) Lyne builds the brow so that it's the focal point of the look. The thick, straight-across style is reminiscent of an androgynous brow, according to Lyne.
The most attention was given to the brows, to make sure the look reflected the inspiration.
Because the brows were so bold, Lyne went for a minimal eye look. She applied MAC Zoom Lash in Lofty Brown to the model's lashes (after curling them), then used MAC Coffee Eye Pencil in the waterline, to add definition.
To keep the skin fresh and dewy, Lyne used MAC Prep+Prime Fortified Skin Enhancer SPF 35, layered under the brand's Studio Finish SPF 35 Concealer where needed.
Lyne finished off the look with a shiny pink lip. She mixed MAC lipsticks in Please Me and Dare You for the lips, then applied the Please Me lipstick, very lightly, to the cheeks.
