Next April, Angelenos will have yet another reason to crow: One of L.A.'s very own, Herb Ritts, who's enjoyed a lengthy career as a world-renowned photographer and music-video director, will have his photography on exhibit right here in his homebase at the Getty Center. Even if the name doesn't ring a bell, you'll no doubt recognize his highly publicized works, most notably his hugely famous celebrity and supermodel portraits from the '80s and '90s featuring Madonna, Jack Nicholson, Julia Roberts, Christy Turlington, and Naomi Campbell to name only a few. The Getty Museum has acquired 69 of the photographer's pieces that feature fashion models, nudes, and celebrities to be displayed for the public in 2012. "This acquisition not only helps build our collection of fashion photography, but also fulfills our commitment to collecting bodies of works by Los Angeles-based artists,” says Getty Museum Senior Curator, Judith Keller. Ritts will also join the likes of Richard Avedon, Louise Dahl Wolfe, and Cecil Beaton, whose fashion photography has also been on display at this L.A. institution of culture. We suggest you mark your calendars with a reminder: April isn't exactly around the corner, but don't make the mistake of missing this.
