The “Party Dress” Might Be On Its Way Out

We probably started to veer away from the traditional “going-out dress” the moment we realized the following: a night of dancing requires more freedom than a mini hem allows; body-con was never the only way to be sexy; and frankly, there are far too many pants options that deserve their moment under the disco ball. Now, we have science to back up our suspicions: Pants (namely, our old-faithful skinny jeans) are becoming the going-out norm, leaving dresses in the dust. Or, at least in third place.
According to a study by Voucher Codes Pro, a U.K.-based destination for online deals and promotions, dresses have become the third-most popular evening-out outfit of choice. Jumpsuits come in second place, while our tried-and-true (and admittedly somewhat played-out) skinny jeans rank number-one. Consider this another strong case that slim-fit denim has the staying power necessary to remain relevant, exciting, and a preferred sartorial option — season after season, year after year, practically without an end in sight. Of course, that assumption is contrary to other evidence that suggests athleisure and wide-leg fits are the new wave of popular pants trends.
The Voucher Codes Pro study surveyed 2,156 women between the ages of 18 and 36, and a resounding 57% percent claimed that skinny jeans were their favorite for nighttime wear. Additional findings show that more than half the women surveyed own fewer dresses this year than last. And, women now prefer to party in red or blue hues. Sorry, LBDs of the world — this is just not your moment.
