One of the great things about this city: Twenty- and thirty-somethings do things like learn how to quilt on a Thursday night without much irony (how very Portlandia of us!). And that's precisely what'll be happening at one of our favorite Mission shops, Gravel & Gold, tomorrow night, January 19, from 7-9 p.m.
For $10, G&G's Rebekah Werth will be hosting a two-part "Quilting For Newbies" workshop where participants will spin out adorable baby-sized quilts. In the first session, beginners are welcome and will be taught how to design with squares and rectangles, cut with a rotary cuter, pin the designs in place, sew it all together on a machine, and more. Just bring at least one yard of three of your fave fabrics (different light, medium, and dark shades are suggested) and you're good to go.

Then, to finish up your project, head to the second, more in-depth class on January 26, which will boost your newfound skills up one more notch (building a quilt "sandwich" and other nifty techniques are involved) and allow you to just about complete your cozy little work of art.
