Not that we needed an official reason, but it's National Pie Day! The American Pie Council® suggests that we celebrate this momentous occasion "by taking some time to slow down and share heartfelt gratitude with loved ones over a delicious slice of pie."
And, from where we're sitting (at our desks) right now, anticipating a Nor'easter storm (and thus some sedentary chill time at home), we'll take on the APC's recommendation heartily. In fact, we may just take it to the next level and make a pie. From scratch.
And you can too. You can totally use premade or packaged frozen crust here, and we'll show you how to make it look as pretty as the pros do. Click through for the video tutorial, and feel free to start right now with the slowing down and sharing with friends bit.
Step 1: Roll out dough on floured surface.
Step 2: Fold twice and transfer to pie plate.
Step 3: With scissors, trim to leave a 1-inch overhang.
Step 4: Tuck overhang under so it makes a high edge.
Step 5: For an open-face pie, you can decorate the edge by pressing a fork around the rim to make a pattern.
Step 6: To fill the pie, poke holes with a fork around the base of the crust.
Step 7: Add filling of your choice.
Step 8: Place top on by rolling dough around rolling pin and gently unrolling over filling.
Step 9: For another decorative edge, use thumb and index finger of one hand, and index finger of the other hand, to crimp dough.
Step 10: Brush top gently with eggwash (1 egg and 1 tablespoon water or more, beaten till uniform in color).
Step 11: Using a knife, make small decorative cuts on top of pie.
