Ditch the Dry Shave
We've all been there: You're about to run out the door and you catch sight of your hirsute gams, so you grab a razor and just whip it across the stubble. According to Zeifman, that's a fast way to get nicks, razor burn, and ingrown hairs. "Always moisten skin before shaving," she says. "Water helps to hydrate and soften skin." Also, Zeifman says to wait to shave until the end of your shower — the hot water will soften up your hair, making it easier to slice through.
For the Love of All Things Holy, Put Down The Soap
We know you know this already, and yet many of you continue to use your bar soap to shave. Please stop. "A moisturizing shave gel creates a barrier between the skin and the razor for added protection. it helps the razor glide over the skin for a closer, smoother shave," says Zeifman. Some of our fave creams include Eos Shave Cream, Lavanila The Healthy Body Wash 2-in-1 Shower & Shave, Kiss My Face Moisture Shave, and Skintimates Skin Therapy Dry Skin Moisturizing Shave Cream. If you're in a pinch, you can always use conditioner — it gives your skin the slip it needs so the razor won't snag on your legs.
Don't Go Against The Grain
Always be sure to shave hair in the direction the hair grows, not against it. This will minimize irritation and make sure you get the closest shave. For your bikini area, Zeifman says to shave horizontally, from the outside to the inside of the upper thigh, using smooth, even strokes.
After-Shave Reminder
Once you've mastered the actual shaving, you need to make sure to follow the proper after-care steps. Says Zeifman, "Apply a cream formula lotion that has one percent hydrocortisone in it to help prevent inflammation and bumps."
